Holy Orders Holy Orders is a calling of men to be a deacon, priest or bishop. God calls both men and women to serve God and the Church through religious vocations but only men can be ordained. The sacrament of Holy Orders confers a special grace on the men chosen for orders. This sacrament is received only once in a lifetime. Deacons are men ordained for the tasks of service to the Church. They are not priests but their ordination allows them to perform certain ministerial and liturgical duties.
